My preferred terminal is [WezTerm](https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/index.html), which works on all major platforms. On Windows I also use [Windows Terminal](https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9n0dx20hk701?hl=en-us&gl=US).

I use a mixture of [Prettier][prettier] and [ESLint][eslint] when developing my own projects, and encourage teams to use it if they aren't already. It takes code style and formatting out of code review discussions and keeps everything consistent.
I prefer to use formatting tools (e.g. [Prettier](https://prettier.io/)) when writing code, and rely on those for conforming to established coding style guidelines. I encourage teams to use them if they aren't already.

I use the latest version of macOS for my work, but am comfortable doing web development on Windows 11 too.

I use the latest version of macOS primarily, but am comfortable doing web development on Linux or Windows.

My favourite frameworks are [React][reactjs] for JavaScript and [Tailwind][tailwindcss] for CSS. Lately though I find myself gravitating to things that don't require as much tooling. Modern React confuses the hell out of me, and feels like a solution to a problem that no longer exists - JavaScript has come a _long_ way since 2013. For CSS I love utility classes, but get bogged down with the sheer number of them in Tailwind (class name soup is real, but not a reason to avoid Tailwind). I find myself looking toward solutions that work for years to come and introduce as few breaking changes as possible.
When working in web development, I try to use as few tools as possible, and rely as much as I can on HTML, CSS, and plain JavaScript. Where possible, I prefer my development pipeline to eventually compile into just HTML with as little JavaScript as possible.
When it comes to mobile development my tool of choice is [React Native][reactnative]. Unlike its web counterpart, the React Native space continues to get better and better. I love using tools like [Reanimated][reanimated] to make fluid and beautiful animations. [Expo][expo] has changed the game and makes development a breeze. There is certainly some magic going on under-the-hood.
That said, sometimes bigger tools are necessary, and I will typically reach for [React](https://react.dev/) in those situations. I've been using React for over 10 years now, and feel comfortable within its ecosystem.
While I'm not a mobile developer, I am comfortable using [React Native](https://reactnative.dev/) to write cross-platform mobile apps.

My monitor is a [Dell U3423WE][u3423we] ultra-wide monitor. It has a built-in KVM switch that lets me swap between my work and gaming computer effortlessly. My only complaint is that the Ethernet port is flaky, so I can't use it.

I've tried every streaming service out there that's available in Canada (RIP to [Rdio][rdio], you were the real one), and I've given up and settled with [Apple Music][applemusic]. At least it integrates decently well with the ecosystem.

Speaking of buying music, I need a way to keep it organized. Enter [beets][beets], which does an amazing job. It ships with a bunch of opinionated defaults that line up with my own opinions, which worked great for me. Can be tweaked and tinkered with to your heart's content.

When it comes to playing music from the Plex server, I like [Prism][prismapp].
I use the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones. Unparalleled noise cancelling and long battery life. Just wish it could swap devices easier. I've had these for over 5 years and they keep going. One day I might upgrade to a recent model that handles device switching better, but these are great. If I need wired headphones, I plug in a 3.5mm jack and they work great (even unpowered).

I use [ListenBrainz](https://listenbrainz.org/) for tracking my music listening history.

For wired headphones I have my [Sony MDR-7506][sonymdr7506]s. Just plain good sound. I wish they still made the MDRv6, though.
[MusicBox](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/musicbox-save-music-for-later/id1614730313) is a wonderful "read it later" app for music. It supports tagging and rating, and integrates well with iOS's Share Sheet. Supports Apple Music and Spotify. You can add songs, albums, and even playlists!
I use [Last.fm][lastfm] for tracking my music listening history. They've been around for a long time. I find their reports insightful and chock-full of interesting data. I love being able to go back several years and see what I was listening to.

[Feedbin][feedbin] for managing my feeds. No matter what anyone has said, RSS is _not dead_. If anything, they are flourishing even more.

[NetNewsWire](https://netnewswire.com/) for consuming my RSS feeds.

[Reeder][reeder] for consuming my feeds. A beautiful interface with intuitive gestures. It makes reading fun, plain and simple. It also periodically downloads copies of your feed, so connectivity isn't required to read.

[Obsidian](https://obsidian.md) for all of my note-taking. It's cross-platform and supports plugins. Built-in support for backlinks. I don't have a complex organization strategy for my notes - just a basic set of folders. It's very easy to get caught in the rabbit hole of "best way to organize your thoughts".

[Raycast](https://www.raycast.com/) for doing computer-related things. My favourite notebook is the [Hobonichi Techo][techo]. I use it as a journal and catch-all for life events. It's well-suited to tracking emphera like movie tickets or receipts. I adore the paper - it's a thin, delicate paper with a wonderful texture. It's somehow strong enough to resist fountain pen bleed-through. There is a whole category of accessories and covers to personalize your Techo. They also offer a variety of other notebook formats that all use the same paper. If you're not careful, you'll find yourself dumping money into the hobby.
I love any notebook by [Hobonichi](https://www.1101.com/store/techo/en/). They all feature beautiful and delicate paper that somehow resists fountain pen bleed-through. It has a wonderful texture and feel as you turn each page. The majority of their notebooks lie flat when opened, which is one of their best features. You can absolutely get lost in the sea of accessories and personalization options that Hobonichi has. You've been warned.
My favourite pen is my [TWSBI ECO-T][twsbi] in the mint-blue colour. The transparent style evokes a feeling of nostalgia. I love seeing my ink well full of beautiful colours. I use a fine nib. I find the thickness just right.
I have two notebooks currently. Both are plain, grid-lined notebooks. One is their A6 size (same size as the Techo), which I use for journalling. I have another in A5 size (same size as the Cousin, larger than a Techo) which acts as my scratchpad and short-term note-taking.
Another favourite fountain pen is the [Lamy Safari][lamysafari]. As a starter pen, you can't go wrong here. There are such a wide variety of nibs and colours to choose from.
I use a [Fjallraven High Coast Hip Pack](https://www.fjallraven.com/ca/en-ca/bags-gear/backpacks-bags/travel-bags/high-coast-hip-pack/?v=F23223::7323451061851) as my everyday carry. It's just big enough that I can fit all of my things without feeling cumbersome. I honestly don't know why it took me so long to embrace the bag life.

I ended up changing up preferred or default apps up in 2024, and thought it would be interesting to highlight the changes here. I'll do this at the end of 2025 and see if anything else changes!
I also updated my [/uses](/uses) page to match these new changes.

## iTerm2 to WezTerm
Around May of 2024, [iTerm2's 3.5.0 patch notes](https://iterm2.com/downloads/stable/iTerm2-3_5_0.changelog) mentioned the inclusion of ChatGPT. The addition was a forced change, albeit not functioning until the user provided an OpenAI API key to enable it. I didn't appreciate how AI was shoehorned into my terminal application, without any notice or warning. Since this transpired, [the AI feature is now a completely separate plugin](https://iterm2.com/ai-plugin.html).
I don't believe that AI should be anywhere near one of the most privileged parts of an operating system. It could be potentially exposed to sensitive secrets, or suggest a destructive action that affects the entire system.
I ended up switching to [WezTerm](https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/index.html), and have been happy since. This has an added benefit of being fully cross-platform, so my configuration can carry over to any OS.

## Prism to Plexamp
I do wish that [Prism](https://prism-music.app/) had a dedicated macOS app (it works via Catalyst at least). The developer hinted at an upcoming macOS version a while ago, but I haven't seen any updates since then.

Since subscribing to [Plex Pass](https://www.plex.tv/plex-pass/), I gained access to a bunch of features on [Plexamp](https://www.plex.tv/plexamp/) which lead to me giving it a try. It's been a great experience so far. I particularly enjoy the Station features, which has surfaced some long forgotten music that I loved. Plexamp doesn't need to worry about syncing either, it just works.

## Last.fm to ListenBrainz
After being sneakily charged more for Last.fm Pro (and also learning they are owned by Paramount), I'm done with [Last.fm](https://www.last.fm). It was a good 18 years of listening, but I'm moving on. Enter [ListenBrainz](https://listenbrainz.org), from MusicBrainz (which is run by MetaBrainz, a non-profit). ListenBrainz is a lot like Last.fm, but as an open platform (which also means open source). I've been relying on MusicBrainz as my music database (and I've even contributed a little), so this was a no-_brainz_-er.
It is inconvenient to log my non-Plex music scrobbles to ListenBrainz, but thats a sacrifice I'm okay making.

## 1Password to Bitwarden
Earlier in December of 2024, 1Password announced that [they were joining the Rails Foundation](https://blog.1password.com/1password-joins-rails-foundation/). The Rails Foundation is [chaired by David Heinemeier Hansson](https://rubyonrails.org/2022/11/14/the-rails-foundation), also known as DHH in the wider tech community.
> The founding core members are each represented on the foundation’s board, which is then **chaired by the creator of Ruby on Rails, David Heinemeier Hansson**.
> (emphasis mine)
If you've never heard of DHH before (lucky you), he is the creator of [Ruby on Rails](https://rubyonrails.org/), and co-owner of [37signals](https://37signals.com/). [Basecamp](https://basecamp.com/) (run by 37signals) made the news back in 2021 for [announcing they are banning political discussions at work](https://world.hey.com/jason/changes-at-basecamp-7f32afc5). Suffice it to say, this created a huge controversy. [The Verge has a great article about the fallout](https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/27/22406673/basecamp-political-speech-policy-controversy) if you're curious.
For people part of marginalized groups or minorities, "political discussions" are their life. You can't stop talking about politics when there are politicians threatening to revoke your rights. To be clear, I wholly disagree with Basecamp's decision.
Since then, DHH has taken a hard swing to the right and is cozying up with alt-right ideaology. I hope it would be clear by now that _I do not like that_.
There is no way that in 2024 1Password is unaware of what DHH is doing, which to me suggests that 1Password leadership is complicit or accepting of his views.
I've been eying using [Bitwarden](https://bitwarden.com/) for a while now, and this seemed like the perfect impetus to make the switch. I've been using Bitwarden for about 2 months now and have been satisfied with my experience. The app has its rougher edges and loses the odd niceity. On the other hand, I'm paying almost 80% less for the same features, and it's open source. Their web extensions work great (1Password's Safari extension still sucks).
Overall, very pleased with the switch!

## Feedbin to FreshRSS
2025 might be the year of self-hosting (for me anyway). I don't have any issues with [Feedbin](https://feedbin.com/) and think its a great product, but I'm really getting into self-hosting my own solutions and thought I'd give RSS aggregators a shot. I don't use many features with Feedbin, so I figured the transition would be easy.
[FreshRSS](https://www.freshrss.org/) works like a charm, and integrates with [NetNewsWire](https://netnewswire.com/) for easy reading. The change means I save some money on my annual subscriptions.
